Wavemakers formed when a group of senior figures from various charities and organisations working with children and young people identified the need for a charity with a different viewpoint.
Involving children and young people at every stage, Wavemakers was developed and branded to reflect a completely new organisation with new aims, objectives and values. The overall aim was to encourage and empower children and young people to improve their lives, have their voices heard and make a positive difference to society.
An annual awards scheme was used to highlight and celebrate inspirational achievements and initiatives of children and young people from diverse, and often difficult backgrounds, around the UK. These young people have changed their worlds in the areas of social care, education and health.
Young people at various locations throughout the UK judged the nominations to determine who would be put forward to the short-list. The winners were then chosen from the short-list by a Final Judging Panel, made up of representatives from the regional judging workshops together with adult experts.
Funding ceased and the Wavemakers project was closed in March 2008.
